Equine Facilitated Learning Certification through the HERD Institute:
The HERD Institute®️ offers an inclusive environment, embraces an attitude of abundance, and honors the potential of all its members. Our vision is to create a culturally competent and collaborative global community of certified practitioners who incorporate horses into mental health and educational spaces.

My Story:  During my last two years as an English teacher, I saw students experiencing anxiety and depression at levels never before seen.  Knowing I was ready to move away from the classroom after thirty-eight years in education, I wanted to share what I had known since my early childhood:  the healing power of horses!  Excellence and Equity were the mantra of my school district, and the focus on equity allowed me to better understand the needs of all kids.  After reading the HERD's Commitment to Belonging, I knew I had found a program that would allow me to continue learning and engage participants in experiential learning that would allow them to better engage in school and life more fully.  My program partners are sweet Ariel, a beautiful Palomino Morgan, and Hammer, a big, Buckskin Quarter Horse.  Along with my daughter Kelly, we started Spirit Ranch JSP in honor of my mother who introduced me to horses and lived a life of caring for others.  Welcome to Spirit Ranch JSP--All are welcome at the barn!

My Story

My story begins when I was five years old. I have been around horses my entire life. When I was merely five my family moved to Parker and bought me my first horse, Alley Cat. She was a SASSY, elegant Morgan and not what most would consider a "kid-friendly" horse. But I LOVED her and the rest was history. I formed a bond with Alley Cat that to this day is unmatched. I participated in 4-H and competed in gymkhana events. I dabbled in showmanship, jumping, and English riding. I began giving horseback riding lessons when I was a sophomore in high school. I eventually left my family's ranch to go to college at Western State University and eventually Colorado State University, where I received my BS in Psychology and Criminal Justice. I am so excited to return to my passion. Although Alley Cat is no longer with us, I am so grateful to work with our lovely horses, Ariel and Hammer. These two horses embody the gentle spirit of my parents' ranch.
